Storm Damage Inspection

Due to the storms in East Tennessee in recent weeks, many homeowners have damage to their homes from wind, hail or rain.  Or all three!   For a homeowner, this can be difficult to deal with. First you must deal with the insurance adjuster. They may not be able to visit your home for several weeks and you may be concerned about further damage or mold.  Then you begin to get estimates but everyone’s price and scope are different.  Additionally, “Uncle Joe”, “cousin Bob” or well-meaning co-workers are offering you conflicting advice.  Who can you turn to for an impartial, expert opinion about what to do?  A specialized home inspector, with the proper training and experience in property damage repairs, can provide you with a home inspection. Look for a home inspector that can provide you with step by step instructions to help guide you through the repair process.

  Finding a home inspector with past experience in insurance property damage repairs is a bonus.  The right inspector will have all the tools necessary to perform this service. Equipment such as an infrared camera, sophisticated moisture detector, a mold particle counter, etc.  A trained storm damage inspector will get close up your roof by walking it or using a long extension ladder.  Binoculars alone will not find the shingle bruising common with some hail damage.  Sharp, clear photos are needed to prove your case to your insurance company.

 Who do you get to do the repairs?  Your well trained storm damage inspector can recommend local companies whose work he has inspected for years. Don’t use out of state companies who may not return for warranty repairs.  After the work is completed, we recommend holding back 10% of the payment until a storm damage inspector can inspect it for proper installation and the use of correct materials.  Do you know the difference in a 25 year warranty shingle versus a 30 year shingle?  The cost is certainly not the same.
